4 Dog Breeds That Can Eat Fruits

It seems amazing and weird at the same time when we see a dog munching on fruits like it’s a chicken leg. However, you would be amazed to know that there are dog breeds that love chewing on fruits—and in fact, love eating them.

But this also raises some concerns, like which fruit is good for them. Can they eat any fruit? Well, dogs are different from us. They have different internal systems, so not every fruit is good for them. We’ll discuss everything in this post to get a detailed response.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

1. Golden Retrievers

Yes, you would be amazed to know that Golden Retrievers, also known as the “golden child of America,” love eating raw fruits.

When I saw my Golden puppy eating an apple like it eats meat, I loved it. But then I went on the internet to find whether it’s even good for them or not—and surprisingly, apples are healthy for them if they eat in moderation.

Apples are not a major part of a Golden Retriever’s diet, so only a couple of slices are fine. Do not let them eat more than one apple, as it may cause issues.

In fact, they can also eat bananas, blueberries, and watermelon. Yes, you read it right—they eat many fruits!

So, if you want your Golden Retriever to enjoy some fruits, you can offer the foods listed above.

⚠️ Avoid giving them tomatoes, nuts, and avocados—these are not good for their health. In fact, they are not safe for any dog breed.

2. Labrador Retrievers

They are closely related to Golden Retrievers, hence they too like eating fruits. Labradors, as you know, are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, known for being energetic and very friendly.

Some of the fruits they like are pears, strawberries, mangoes, and bananas. Yes, it’s a bit amazing that they like bananas—which is fantastic. Bananas are very beneficial for the digestive system.

I recently saw a video in which a beautiful Labrador was eating a banana like it was just another normal day. I liked that video so much, I even saved and shared it with my friends who have Labradors.

I wanted to tell my friends that yes, dogs do eat fruits. It just depends on how you have raised them, and you also need the knowledge of what food to offer.

3. English Mastiffs

This dog breed can surprise some people, and some of you might not have even heard of them before. For those who don’t know, let me share some quick facts before talking about their fruit diet.

English Mastiffs are the biggest dog breed in the world. They are even bigger—sometimes twice the size of a German Shepherd, especially in terms of weight.

They are massive dogs that can grow up to 35 inches tall and weigh over 100 kg—which is insane if you think about it.

Not only that, they are not lazy dogs. They love playing with their owners, spending time with kids, and protecting their territory from other animals and burglars.

The only problem is that because they are massive, they need a high amount of socialization and training from the beginning. If not provided, they could become harsh on people and may hurt small animals or children.

When it comes to their diet, fruits and veggies are not their primary food. They need a protein-rich diet like meat. However, they do sometimes enjoy fruits such as bananas, apples, blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, oranges, pears, peaches, pineapple, raspberries, and watermelon.

Warning: Always remove seeds from fruits before feeding them—seeds can cause health issues.

Should you get an English Mastiff? Well, I don’t recommend them if you are a first-time dog owner. They are highly susceptible to heat stroke, joint issues, and because of their size, handling them can be a struggle.

But they are a great choice for those who have handled large breeds in the past and carry many years of experience in training and caring for big dogs.

4. Pugs

Pugs are another small dog breed. They have a unique face shape, which unfortunately causes them breathing problems. However, if you pay attention to their health needs, they are highly social dogs and can have a decent life span.

Pugs have been found eating fruits—and they love it. But just like any other dog breed, make sure not to give them chocolate, onions, or garlic. These can mess with their internal system.

They are very friendly and can develop separation anxiety if left alone for too long. Pugs like to chill most of the day, lying on the sofa, eating, or sleeping. However, young pugs can be super energetic.

There are many clips online of Pugs running around and playing intensely with their owners. However, since they need extra care due to their breathing problems, I usually don’t recommend them to first-time owners. Though, they are super amazing dogs.

Conclusion

A dog doesn’t need to eat a lot of fruits—they usually need a protein-rich diet to strengthen their bones and muscles. But sometimes, it’s okay to give fruits to them.

There are some dog breeds that enjoy fruits more than others, like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and Pugs. However, most dog breeds will just come, smell, and leave the fruit untouched.

I hope you liked this post.
