7 Heaviest Dogs Ever (Mastiffs)
A giant dog that is very capable of guarding your home at night from intruders, while being gentle at the same time, is everyone’s choice; however, finding a dog like that, especially one that meets every term and condition of your choice, could be quite difficult.
In this post, I’ll try to sort this out by giving you a suggestion that might work out for you in deciding which breed to go after.
However, before you just read this article and decide, let me tell you something: if you have no experience, you must not directly go for a massive breed such as mastiffs; you need to hold your excitement a bit and go with a smaller or medium-sized breed.
Why?
Well, mastiffs can pull even a big-sized man as they have crazy strength compared to other breeds. Holding them tight and not letting them chase after people or other pet dogs can be difficult if you have not had enough experience.
Smaller breeds, on the other hand, can be easier to manage.
Now, if you have had some experience with medium-sized dogs and want to start unlocking something new, you can go for a giant dog like a mastiff.
Here are 7 recommendations from me: These dogs are not only big, but they are gentle too, and are capable of shielding your home from unwanted people and animals.
1: English Mastiff
Though the name English Mastiff sounds way too English, however, they were actually not born there, they were born in Spain, in fact, most mastiffs are from there.
Now, for first-time owners, the English mastiff might be way too much to handle, as they are literally the heaviest dogs on the planet. They can weigh up to 104 kg or more than 230 pounds, which is absolutely crazy to think about.
They are not as tall as Great Danes, but they are very heavy-looking giants.
In terms of temperament, they are amazing; however, they might not be that amazing in terms of sports, like running. In fact, if they get tired even by walking, leave sprinting.
Also, running too much isn’t recommended for them due to their weight. Why? You might be wondering, well, their joint could hurt.
2: Saint Bernard
St. Bernard or Saint Bernard looks like a giant teddy bear, but the fun fact is that they not only look like teddies, but they are actual teddies.
However, their look cannot downgrade how well they are in terms of guarding their love members. Yes, they can definitely guard their family members; they were in fact made for that job.
Now, in terms of weight, they are very heavy, up to 200 pounds, it is less compared to the English mastiff, but when they both stand by each other, you cannot tell much difference in terms of weight.
This is a highly recommended breed, especially if you want to have experience with larger dog breeds. They do, however, drool a lot, so that can be a headache for you as you might have to clean the sofas and floor often.
If you can handle that, it’s an amazing dog to have.
3: Neapolitan Mastiff
Neapolitan Mastiffs are giants and look very regal. They have a very calm temperament but a very good sense of protecting when the right time comes; however, will it be the right breed for you? Let’s find out.
They drool, but they don’t shed way too much, like you can handle their shedding, but the drooling part is way worse. It would be very difficult to manage.
They like having a big backyard, they cannot live in tiny spaces, and they do need their exercise time to time to release their energy.
However, a pretty solid dog breed to have; also, they have a very short life span, so keep that in mind before going for them.
4: Tibetan Mastiff
This Himalayan mastiff dog truly looks like a lion; they are not only insanely big compared to most dogs, but are very aggressive and ready to defend their owners when the time is needed.
They are super cute too, but not to mess with; however, as per the experts, they are not made for beginner owners and are not that friendly with kids.
Keeping a mastiff like that can be difficult to manage; in fact, they are one of the worst if you are a first-time owner. So even though they are pretty good dogs in terms of defending but you must not go for them unless you have tons of experience.
5: Newfoundland
Newfoundland is one of the few dogs that love water and isn’t scared of it at all. You need to have a big pool to have them or be ready to bathe them a couple of times a day.
They also can’t stay in hot and humid weather, but even after these many cons, they are still one of the best mastiff breeds out there, as they are truly gentle giants.
They would never look their owners with aggresion and are polite with almost everyone inclduing kids. A perfect mastiff to have in your family.
Newfoundland can go upto 200 punds as well with almost 32 inches in height. After spending almost 10 years with them and caring for them in the hospital I can say with at most confidence that they are one of the best dogs out there.
6: Leonberger
Leonberger looks like a cousin ofthe Tibetan Mastiff but with a bigger and stronger body. They are giants with a lot of hair on their bodies.
One might scare any intruder trying to tresspass on your home, in fact, they too look like lions, just like Tibetan mastiffs, which gives them a really dusticntive look.
Now, their temprment can be decent if they are tarined well, however, lack of training can cause them to be violent and dangerous to people.
Overall, they are great if you have decent experience and can handle a dog that weighs around 190 pounds.
7: Great Dane
Great danes are one of the tallest dogs with height reaching upto 90 centimetere. Great Danes can be really heavy, even if they look a bit skinny, it is due to their bones.
Due to their long stature, their weight increases. They can weigh up to 170 pounds.
If you want great dane then be ready to have a spacious home with strong furtinures. Also, you will have to cut their nails often so that they don’t hurt others after jumping on their chests.
So this is all for today, I hope you liked this post thanks so much.
